Year 8 English
English is a compulsory subject but the English staff at ASHS tries to ensure that the Year 8 English classroom is a stimulating, interesting and fun place to spend the year! Students are introduced to a wide range of texts and there is a strong focus on processes and strategies, prior to presenting work. There are also opportunities for students to improve their command of spelling, punctuation and grammar. Students use journals and reading logs regularly as they develop skills of critical literacy. They also develop a comprehensive portfolio to reflect their personal achievement. Classes in English are not streamed in Year 8.
Years 9 & 10
In years 9 and 10, English is once again a compulsory subject. In Australia, we all need English to communicate - through speaking or through writing. In both Years 9 and 10, the key outcomes are Reading, Writing, Viewing, and Listening/Speaking. We all understand Reading and Writing; whilst Viewing has become an increasingly critical part of today's visual and technological world. Listening and Speaking allow students to study aural texts and encourage communication skills, both as speakers and listeners. In Year 10 English, students are streamed into a course which best suits their aspirations and abilities for successful completion of Years 11 and 12. Students must note that passing Senior School English is required to attain the WACE Certificate and Secondary Graduation.
