The ASHS Physical Education Department (H and PE) provides opportunities for students to develop lifelong understandings of health issues and the skills needed for confident participation in sport and recreational activities. This enables students to make responsible decisions about health and physical activity and to promote their own and others’ health and well being.

Our proximity to the sea allows us to offer a number of ocean based activities and all our students learn to swim in an ocean environment. Many of our learning programs feature aquatic activity leading to the development of skills that make our students confident participants in ocean sports. On several occasions, our students have been able to offer assistance in emergencies along our treacherous coast.
The H and PE Department enjoy close working relationships with the Department of Sport and Recreation, local sporting organisations and providers of outdoor pursuits. Many of our students continue their interests into employment with local organisations delivering health, sport and recreational activities.
Learning to move and enjoying the freedom of movement is a human right. Health and Physical Education is one of the few learning areas in the school curriculum that focuses explicitly on developing the movement skills and concepts children and young people need to participate in physical activities
